Music Week- Shane and Shane

Ok, so this is the last post about music. I am kinda sad. I didn't even get to show my other likes- like the Flyleaf, Addison Road genre or the learned love for brass and classical music (thanks Jason and Dad). I think I have learned about myself that I have a love for good country and heartfelt acoustic music.

Shane and Shane. I bought my first cd when it was just Shane. Barnard. I was in high school. A lot of the people who discipled me in high school were Texas A&M grads who were friends or acquaintances with this guy- Shane Barnard. They all bought his cd when it was first released and I eventually bought my own- Rocks Won't Cry (with some Caleb Carruth collaborations on it). I took it with me to college. This is when the Shane started to tour with Shane Everett. They were from Texas and newly out of college, so they made music and toured the Texas college circuit. I must have seen them in concert 10 times in college- in Denton visiting a friend, at Island Party in A&M, at christian college student conferences, and so many churches in small towns.

Side note- I remember when I got my first job- I attended a job fair in Ft. Worth at the conference center. There were over 100 Dallas/Ft. Worth school districts represented. I was a little overwhelmed and spent more time praying than brushing up on my interview techniques. I walked into the huge conference center and realized I had met with God here before-- at a Christian conference where Shane and Shane had performed. I felt a huge weight lifted off of me. It was as if God was saying- I got this. I know what you a need and I care about you. Just be yourself and trust me. I interviewed with over 20 districts and got a job the next week. I think God was all in that. :)

Back to Shane and Shane- I bought all their cds for like $10 bucks a pop and enjoyed them throughout college. When I met Jason, he was just getting into Shane and Shane. He is a music major and he said it was the best Christian music he had ever heard. He likes all the instruments and harmonies and things. Shane and Shane is our favorite group between the 2 of us- Jason and I. When they come out with a new cd- we wear it out.

Now the Shanes live in Dallas where they have their own recording studio. They are both married (one to Bethany Dillon) and the Everetts have a little girl. So sweet. I hope they produce and record music for a long time. They have a gift.

Lyrics for Vision of You which is video 2.

Come meet us, King Jesus.
Oh wind of change blow through this temple.
Sweet spirit of God, come and mend our hearts.
For all we have are songs. Unless you come.

Awaken what's inside of me.
Tune my heart to all You are in me.
Even though you're here, God come.
May the vision of You be the death of me.
and even though You've given everything.
Jesus come!

Come free us, King Jesus.
Its the only way that freedom is given.
From you and you alone in the work You've already done.
All we have are songs, unless You come.

Awaken what's inside of me.
Tune my heart to all You are in me.
Even though you're here, God come.
May the vision of You be the death of me.
and even though You've given everything.
Jesus come!

Here we are, Lord, in this place.
Crying out for Your embrace.
To hear Your voice more than songs.

Awaken what's inside of me.
Tune my heart to all You are in me.
Even though you're here, God come.
May the vision of You be the death of me.
and even though You've given everything.
Jesus come!

Music Week- Garth Brooks

Can anyone grow up in Texas and not love Garth Brooks? I think not. I remember being in 3rd grade and listening to the radio hoping to catch Rodeo or The River. I know this man is confused in his personal life. Dropping country music at the height of his career to become Chris Gaines was a rough spot for me. My favorite thing to do was to clean the house or get ready for school listening to his music. I could put my all into singing along and not get bored with what I was really doing.

I am not alone in my love for this music. Garth Brooks is the #1 selling artist of all time passing Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley.

Here are the lyrics for The Thunder Rolls-- classic:

Three thirty in the morning
Not a soul insight
The city's lookin' like a ghost town
On a moonless summer night
Raindrops on the windshield
There's a storm moving in
He's headin' back from somewhere
That he never should have been
And the thunder rolls
And the thunder rolls
Every light is burnin'
In a house across town
She's pacin' by the telephone
In her faded flannel gown
Askin' for miracle
Hopin' she's not right
Prayin' it's the weather
That's kept him out all night
And the thunder rolls
And the thunder rolls

The thunder rolls
And the lightnin' strikes
Another love grows cold
On a sleepless night
As the storm blows on
Out of control
Deep in her heart
The thunder rolls

She's waitin' by the window
When he pulls into the drive
She rushes out to hold him
Thankful he's alive
But on the wind and rain
A strange new perfume blows
And the lightnin' flashes in her eyes
And he knows that she knows
And the thunder rolls
And the thunder rolls

The thunder rolls
And the lightnin' strikes
Another love grows cold
On a sleepless night
As the storm blows on
Out of control
Deep in her heart
The thunder rolls

[3rd Verse:]

She runs back down the hallway
To the bedroom door
She reaches for the pistol
Kept in the dresser drawer
Tells the lady in the mirror
He won't do this again
Cause tonight will be the last time
She'll wonder where he's been

And a little happier If Tomorrow Never Comes.

Sometimes late at night
I lie awake and watch her sleeping
She's lost in peaceful dreams
So I turn out the lights and lay there in the dark
And the thought crosses my mind
If I never wake up in the morning
Would she ever doubt the way I feel
About her in my heart
If tomorrow never comes
Will she know how much I loved her
Did I try in every way to show her every day
That she's my only one
And if my time on earth were through
And she must face the world without me
Is the love I gave her in the past
Gonna be enough to last
If tomorrow never comes
'Cause I've lost loved ones in my life
Who never knew how much I loved them
Now I live with the regret
That my true feelings for them never were revealed
So I made a promise to myself
To say each day how much she means to me
And avoid that circumstance
Where there's no second chance to tell her how I feel
If tomorrow never comes
Will she know how much I loved her
Did I try in every way to show her every day
That she's my only one
And if my time on earth were through
And she must face the world without me
Is the love I gave her in the past
Gonna be enough to last
If tomorrow never comes
So tell that someone that you love
Just what you're thinking of
If tomorrow never comes

Greatness. Apparently he has a thing about copyrighting his music videos, not liking youtube, and not putting songs on i-tunes. So, here is what I got. Which is not a lot.

Music Week- Caleb Carruth

This man is not as well known as some Christian singers in this genre. I discovered him when I helped lead a Christian weekend thingy and the payment was his cd. I know- not necessarily equitable--but it turned out to be. I wore this cd out! I introduced Jason to it and we had a good friend sing one of his songs at our wedding.

He collaborated with Shane Bernard on Rocks Won't Cry. Then he made his one and only cd- Darkness Falls. Then he fell off the radar and I think he lives in Dallas or Houston with his family.

My favorite song on the cd is Reason. Here are the lyrics.

You are the reason that I love
You are the reason that I am
and You are love
and You are I AM

You have no variation
You have no shifting shadow
and You are love
and You are I AM

You'll come like a thief in the night
Will I be waiting or found wanting?
You'll come in your power and might
Will I be watching when the trumpet sounds?

You are the Father of Heavenly Lights
Gift from above
Giving death to Him
Giving birth to us
You have no variation
You have no shifting shadow
and you are love
and you are I AM

You come like  a thief in the night
Will I be waiting or found wanting?
You come in your power and might
Will I be watching when the trumpet sounds?
Give me reason for my life
and tell me secrets of your bride
Is me which you delight in keeping?
I delight in finding

Give me reason for my life
and tell me secrets of your bride
Is me which you delight in keeping?
because I delight in finding

You come like a thief in the night
Will I be waiting or found wanting?
You come in your power and might
Will I be watching when the trumpet sounds?

Vids. He pretty  much never performs- so this is the best I could do.

This is the song Spring Stohler sang at our wedding. She is sweet talented.

Music Week- Relient K

Punk rock at its finest. I started listening to this band in high school with their famous single- Marilyn Manson ate my Girlfriend. I enjoy their light hearted demeanor. My freshman year of college, I became a fan of Sadie Hawkins Dance. During my early marriage years I rediscovered them thanks to a used bookstore and discovered For the Moments I Feel Faint.

This band holds a special place in my heart because I can't listen to a song without a memory of a time passed coming up. Music does that to people.

Here are the lyrics to Sadie Hawkins Dance:

All the girls in the bathroom talking
who they gonna take to the Sadie Hawkins
My ears are burning but I kept on walking
smile on my face and an air guitar rocking

The Sadie Hawkins Dance
in my khaki pants
There's nothing better
oh oh oh
The girls ask the guys
it's always a surprise
There's nothing better
baby do you like my sweater?

Sitting in the back of my next class napping
Got up, gave a speech, then bowed to the clapping
Told a funny joke got the whole class laughing
think I got a tan from the light which I was basking

[x2:]

The Sadie Hawkins Dance
in my khaki pants
There's nothing better
oh oh oh
The girls ask the guys
it's always a surprise
There's nothing better
baby do you like my sweater?

Scan the cafeteria for some good seating
I found a good spot by the cheerleaders eating
The quarterback asked me if I'd like a beating
I said that's one thing I won't be needing
And since I'm rather smart and cunning
I took off down the next hall running
Only to get stopped by a girl so stunning
only to get stopped by a girl so stunning

She said, "You're smooth, and good with talking.
You're going with me to the Sadie Hawkins"

The Sadie Hawkins Dance
in my khaki pants
There's nothing better
oh oh oh
The girls ask the guys
it's always a surprise
There's nothing better
baby do you like my sweater?

The Sadie Hawkins Dance
in my khaki pants
There's nothing better
oh oh oh
The girls ask the guys
it's always a surprise
There's nothing better
baby do you like my sweater?

This song must really be listened to in order to get the full effect. If you catch yourself doing a little air guitar, bouncing your head, or singing along with the guitar solo-- it's ok-- we all do it.

Enjoy.

There videos on youtube are the very non existent- at least the good ones. Here's one of my brother's favorite songs.
